Urchfont – The Wiltshire Village Full of English Charm

September 11, 2023

Nestled in the heart of the Wiltshire countryside, sits Urchfont, a picturesque village exuding quintessential English charm.

Named ‘Best Kept Village’ several times in Wiltshire’s Best Kept Village Competition, Urchfont has a wonderful sense of community amongst the pretty thatched cottages, ancient church and tranquil pond.

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Urchfont is ideal for nature lovers thanks to its many walking and cycling trails that take you through the rolling hills, lush valleys and mature woodland.

Urchfont’s main attractions include the stunning St. Michael and All Angels Church, dating back to the 13th century and the village pond, dating back to the 17th century and fed by natural spring bubbles.

The village is also home to a number of welcoming pubs, including the popular Lamb Inn, serving up delicious pub food and locally brewed ale. Or for those with a sweet tooth, the village shop and Post Office offer an array of homemade cakes as well as artisanal cheeses and other local produce.

The village is home to a number of local events and festivals throughout the year including the renowned annual Urchfont Scarecrow Festival. Taking place every year over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, the scarecrow festival transforms the village into a colourful display, with dozens of creative and quirky creations dotted about the village. These events bring together locals and visitors alike, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Less than 6 miles away sits the medieval market town of Devizes, here you will discover a wide range of traditional independent shops or how about a call on the Thursday market, there is lots to explore.

Located just 4 miles east of Devizes, you will find Planks Farm Shop; an emporium of fresh local produce and tasty treats, all prepared on the farm itself.

Whether you’re interested in history, culture, nature or just looking for a peaceful escape, this village has something for everyone.
