Salisbury: City life in the country

March 25, 2019

Do you enjoy browsing markets and independent shops, grabbing a coffee with friends in unique cafes or dining out on different cuisines? What about stunning architecture steeped in history, a varied arts and entertainment scene or tranquil riverside and country walks?

Named the best place to live in the Sunday Times ‘Best Places To Live Guide’, Salisbury offers all this and more, with countless places to explore throughout the city.

The city’s famous cathedral, home of the Magna Carta, is a few minutes’ walk from Chequers’ modern, open plan living apartments, as is the twice-weekly Charter Market which sells everything from freshly baked bread to newly cut flowers.

While the city has all your favourite high street names, its local and independent businesses add to the character and choice.

As well as an abundance of independent retailers, so many there is a dedicated website, there is also a farmers’ market on various dates throughout the Spring/Summer, an Artisan market the first Sunday of every month and a vintage market during March and Oct.

Dining out is easy with a wide variety of delicious cuisines including Thai food at the Rai d’Or, Indian cuisine from Café Divali or Italian at Leonardo’s.

And there is much more to enjoy in this culturally vibrant city. Some of the country’s best acting talent tread the boards at the Salisbury Playhouse which also has a studio space attracting the cream of the fringe theatre productions.

Cinema fans will find a mixture of mainstream movies at the city centre’s Odeon while Salisbury Arts Centre hosts an eclectic mix of independent, foreign language and classic films.

In May and June, the Salisbury International Arts Festival opens with 120 events across 16 days. It is guaranteed to have something to suit all tastes with visual arts, music, performance, comedy, film and talks from authors like Minette Walters and Victoria Hislop to highlight just two.

Enjoy a quieter pace in the great outdoors with walks along the River Avon which runs through the city centre or just a short drive away there is the New Forest and Cranborne Chase – an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Chequers House is just a 10-minute walk from the train station with direct links to London, Bath, Bristol, Southampton and Exeter. The apartments also benefit from access to good road links to the M3 motorway, Bath, Bristol and the south coast. The contemporary city homes feature stunning open plan living, large windows to allow plenty of natural light, lift access and parking in a secure courtyard is available.

Living in the heart of Salisbury you can enjoy the best of both worlds, a city in the countryside.
The homes are available to purchase with a 5% deposit with the Government’s Help to Buy scheme. Find out more about Acorn’s beautiful one and two-bedroom apartments at Chequers House.
