Local Area Guide: Bruton, Somerset

July 9, 2020

From stunning countryside and plenty of open space, to a plethora of independent shops, eateries and a fabulous selection of local amenities, it’s not hard to see why Bruton has become a Somerset property hotspot.

With lockdown restrictions easing and the reopening of outdoor pubs and restaurants, we wanted to share our local area guide to showcase what Bruton, home of our Cubis Bruton development, has to offer its residents.

If the weather is on your side why not climb up to the Dovecote, which sits above the town in Abbey Park to take in idyllic views. Built between the 15th and 17th century, this limestone tower is thought to have once been used as a watchtower. If you want to explore the surroundings further, why not follow one of the many footpaths around that will take you for miles – there is certainly no shortage of rolling hills and beautiful countryside.

On the High Street you’ll find the likes of  At The Chapel with their freshly cooked pizzas,  a selection of great pubs and the newest kid on the block, Osip (reopening 30th July), with its Michelin starred chef serving up the best local food. Although Godminster Cheese is not currently open, you can still get your fix of their award-winning organic cheddar made on the outskirts of Bruton by ordering online.

Enjoy the world-renowned Hauser & Wirth gallery on your doorstep boasting the most remarkable Somerset landscape. In addition, The Newt in Somerset will be reopening for guests on the 15th of July with the hotel offering a range of tasty ‘to-go’ options including pre-mixed cocktails inspired by the Somerset setting. And for families rest assured knowing there are a number of fantastic local primary and secondary schools including Bruton School for Girls which has recently been shortlisted for Small Independent School of the Year 2020.
